How do probiotics affect the intestinal flora?

Probiotics consist of live microorganisms that are added to the body to improve or restore the balance of intestinal flora. The intestinal flora is a complex collection of bacteria and other microorganisms that affect our digestion, our immune system and general health. When the intestinal flora is in balance, it can help reduce inflammation, improve nutrient absorption and strengthen the intestinal protective barrier against harmful bacteria.

For example, probiotics can:

  • Reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in the gut

  • Increase the proportion of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium

  • Improve the intestinal mucosa and contribute to better immune response

  • Help break down and absorb nutrients more efficiently

Several studies show that probiotics can help restore a healthy intestinal flora after, for example, antibiotic treatment or intestinal diseases.
